Especially with the 3.5 preview/beta update I’ve been seeing a lot of people say that the stuff CryoUtilities does is wack and doesn’t really work, and one dude even went as far as to call it a placebo in a post where I mentioned it.

Does stuff like the swap file and swappiness, amongst other things, really boost performance and all that? Or is it just a waste of time and (storage) space?

It has some uses. I don’t see much of a difference in most games.

However, with that said, myself and my partner can now play long Crusader Kings 3 games and rarely encounter a crash.

Whereas before using cryo, we would encounter a crash almost every 20 minutes once we got to the late game.

Even if it’s a waste of time/storage it’s minimal. Setting it up takes less than a minute, and it takes up nearly no space. You used up more time to write your questions than installing it would.

Now, the placebo guy really hates Cryo and will go everywhere and hate on it. I don’t understand why. Might be his full time job. He should just make a youtube video with performance comparisons to show off how it doesn’t work.

Meanwhile Cryo when publishing his tools showed performance comparisons before and after. He even showed that the tools had negative performance effect in some games. So I don’t think it’s placebo, when you can have repeatable changes in performance.

That said even the ones shown by Cryo were very minimal. Some people come over here and tell us that unstable 20FPS games work with stable 40FPS with Cryo. You are NOT getting this kind of boost from Cryo. Usually the gains, if any, will be very minor, very often limited to better 1% lows, lower stutters. But even before CryoUtils there would be people reporting new AAA games running at 1440p60 on SD on high, when reality was it barely worked in 720p with FSR2 on medium/high mix.

So, better question would be “I have issues with how game X plays on SD. Will Cryo help or make it even worse?”

The issue is that he’s really the only one who’s properly benchmarked his own tool. Given how prevalent it is I’d have expected someone else like DF to properly look at it.

So, better question would be “I have issues with how game X plays on SD. Will Cryo help or make it even worse?”

That’s the best way to treat it for me. The only game I’ve ever had to use it for was God of War, and I noticed no improvement with anything else I played.

Yeah, that’s surprising that people can argue whenever it works for months, but no one wants to actually put in the work to check. I guess it’s too small of a topic for DF. Maybe now when OLED will be out their cover it more, as their resident handheld gamers hated the old screen :D

I liked that Cryo would sometimes make a vids for certain games to check which settings from his tools should be used, and how, to get most out of the game. Even Cryo doesn’t believe this is silver bullet that “fixes” steam deck.

If there was an easy way to log data like the frame times on the Deck, then there probably would be at least a few people doing benchmarks.

While I am surprised that there aren’t more benchmarks out, this isn’t a paid tool. If you spend the 5 minutes it takes to try it, and don’t feel like it was worth it then simply uninstall like anything else.

He’s not asking for money or begging for donations and I feel that makes a big difference on how much professional scrutiny is required

He should just make a youtube video with performance comparisons to show off how it doesn’t work.

he cant dot hat, it would reveal his lies.

NEver mind setting swap tendencies and swap size does have a proven benefit

this shit always makes me laugh “here let me insert shit to try and discredit anything he has said even though he himself has posted videos showing that cryos bullshit is a lie” man people are really desperate to make me look dumb its funny

people want to fall for dumb shit thats on them but the shit I say unlike cryos false claims are easily researchable. like shit he tries to claim a swap file is faster than zram that alone should be a huge red flag to ANYBODY. but if people want to be dumb and continue to think things such as turning off ram defragmentation is a good thing then there is no helping them

It does not increase performance as in a higher framerates. It does however increase your minimum framerates (1% lows) in some scenarios. It is more a minimum effort tweak to decrease the risk of stutter.

It’s tradeoffs, there’s definitely games that perform worse with cryoutilities, see FH5, but it does increase the performance of 1% lows in some games

I’ve mainly decided to turn it off because if it made a significant difference valve would already be doing it

It’s not a magic performance boost for everything - there are some scenarios it seems like it improves or stabilises performance for certain games, to a greater or lesser extent. In some cases gains are quite marginal.

The only real deep dives into how CryoUtilities affect performance are by Cryo himself. I don’t think he’s lying or misleading anyone, but it is a small pool of analysis.

There’s also one poster here whose whole personality seems to be “CryoUtilities are bad, it’s a placebo, people who use it are dumb”. They’re not very good at putting an argument in any way other than assertion and abuse and I’m not sure they have a lot of insight to offer.

It did appear to help me with the performance and stability of Midnight Suns early this year. Since then I’ve been playing less demanding games and I reverted the changes as they weren’t necessary for me. But there certainly doesn’t seem to be any harm in trying it out.

The Steam Deck isn’t a biological organism. It’s a computer. It either shows an objective performance improvement or it doesn’t.

Not a placebo. It makes a difference. But more importantly in the 1% lows.

It’s a free to use script. You don’t need to use it if you don’t want to.

The placebo guy is wack. I think he is jealous or has a personal issue with Cryo/has personal issues.

Use Cryo or not, just enjoy your deck and turn of that performance monitor :)

Life is much more simple when you are focused on playing instead of focus on 1-3 additional fps

All I can tell you is that it is the only thing that made Marvel: Midnight Sons work on my Steam Deck at launch
