  • Depending on the regulations in your country you can return any ordered device in a short time after having it delivered. Defective or not, you just have to say you are not happy with the product.

In Europe we have 14 days.

If you are in such a country don’t listen to Valve support and send it back ASAP. Because after the legal return window, they can refuse it and say bullshit like 1 dead pixel is not a defect.

I went for the glossy as I had an etched LCD version before and really hated it. Etching creates so much halo on the screen that I find it much more disturbing than regular reflection.

By the way no OLED TV has this kind of matte etched screen. This is nonsense to me to have opted for this technique of antiglare. There are much better ways like what you can find on an iPad or on my LG OLED TV.

  • The question is just to know if you really need or want a handheld gaming PC and are ready to make compromises for this.

A gaming laptop doesn’t offer much in term of mobile gaming. It’s merely a gaming PC which is easy to put in a backpack but will require to be set on a table and plugged to an outlet.

A Steam Deck will let you play for about 3 hours on its battery and won’t require a table. It’s a much more mobile device.

For my part I absolutely hate gaming in a static place. I play in the kitchen, on an armchair, on the sofa, in my bed, in the train, in the hôtel … Steam Deck is a blessing … FOR ME.

    Simple answer yes-ish. 😂

For quite recent AAA games 1080p is often not possible but 720p with FSR is nice and it’s even better with FSR2. With FSR on a small TV you may not see a huge difference between 720p and 1080p. The image will look a bit softer in a quite pleasant way, giving something a bit more natural.

  • Hey !

The LCD Steam Deck just got a huge software update which improved a lot it’s weakest point : dull colors on the screen. Now colors are much more vibrant.

So frankly if I was 13 again… I would just LOVE to get a LCD Steam Deck for christmas. You are a lucky boy (or girl I don’t know) ! Say thank you to your parents, this is already a lot of money. And a very fine gift !

  • TDP settings is like a performance limiter on your Steam Deck. The lower the TDP is set, the more limited performance, less fan noise and the more battery life you get.

For demanding games you usually want to set the TDP as high as possible.

For less demanding games you may want to lower the TDP to gain battery life and silence.

Witcher 3 for example is perfect for me at 9w. I get a bit less fps but it stays around 30fps and I don’t need more. This setting gives me more than 30mn more battery and a much quieter fan noise.

I tried very hard on the Ally. Bought it and used it 4 days before returning it. These 4 days were a pure waste of time.

    • Setting, updating, everything was long and annoying. About 6h continuous work to get the device properly updated and ready to use.

    • For the games I wanted to play (Witcher 3, Assassin’s creed Origin & Odyssey) I had to set the Ally at its highest TDP to get better results than my Steam Deck. Witcher 3 is perfect on the Deck at a 9w TDP and gives me about 3h battery life. On the Ally I had to use the 25w profile to get slightly better graphics (partially because running in 720p didn’t give a good picture on the too high definition screen on the Ally). And then I only got 45mn at best of battery life.

    • The fan on the Ally was considerably lounder than on my Steam Deck.

    • Armory crate is unstable and unusable.

Finally I have the feeling that the Steam Deck has been designed by gamers for gamers and the Ally was designed by people who don’t game at all. A console is not only a specs sheet. For my use case the Ally is a complete failure except for is nicer look.
