Just curious what other people do. I always save and close my games before putting the deck in sleep mode. Not sure why exactly I’m just afraid something will go wrong.

Does anyone leave games open in sleep mode all the time? If so have you ever had any issues?

I’ve found that it works fine to just sleep and resume, although I’ll usually save my game (if the game supports it) to be on the safe side. The only issue I’ve had was one time I did this with Dave the Diver and it seemed to record the whole time it was on sleep as game time, so now when I look at it on Steam it says 50 hours but I’ve only done 10-15 hours. Only happened once though.

Depends on the game really but usually not. Some act really funky when powering back on but it’s usually just audio bugs.

I also have an annoying audio issue where the game won’t switch audio sources mid game. If I open the game without headphones plugged in and then plug some in, the audio will still be on the speakers and vice versa. It happened with dicey dungeons as well.

Decky plugin to pause games, suspends the game process when you suspend the system, cured all my audio issues.

Bluetooth plugin alone is worth it. Adds a Bluetooth menu to the quick settings. Allows me to connect to headphones without having to dig into the settings.

I guess another good one is adding “time to beat” under the games page. Tells you about how long it takes to clear a game. Never know if a game is just 10 hours, 40 hours, or 150 hours. Good to know what I’m getting into.

I’ve only been getting audio bugs since the latest update.

My audio is often crackly when I turn on my Steam Deck. It does seem to go normal when I load up Netflix, but it returns to crackly when I go back to the Steam interface.

Yeah, the audio sync gets whacked in a simple game like Dead Cells. BUT on the other hand I left Alan Wake running in sleep mode a few times and it was fine.

I used to, but now I’ll close a game if I’m in a good spot to close it, and don’t think I’ll want to play it again next time I wake the deck. Most of the time now I just pause the game and put the deck to sleep, one of the big selling points for me was being able to just pause and sleep whenever and come back later. Not all games feature a constant or frequent enough autosave, which can increase tension in some games (i.e. metro exodus on ranger hardcore, and metroid/resident evil needing a save station/typewriter) but makes small play sessions next to impossible, with the deck I don’t need to save and close the game or leave it paused and open sucking massive power on a desktop. I can just hit that little button and come back whenever I feel like it.

It depends, if I know I’m not gonna use it for a bit I’ll close everything to the desktop (I use Windows), but if I’m in the middle of a game and plan to come right back to it, I’ll leave it running.

It feels wrong because historically, sleeping a computer during gaming was pretty likely to cause the game to freeze (or tabbing out, or doing just about anything).

Luckily it’s mostly a solved problem nowadays, I sleep during games all the time. Only game that ever gave me trouble sometimes was Assassins Creed 2 installed through Ubisoft Connect added to Steam, if I let it sleep too long it would have some kind of disconnect from Ubisoft and force close the game (even though actually playing offline was fine).

depends on how soon I plan to play it again. but either way I always save before putting it to sleep. rarely have had issues outside of a few rare games having audio issues that require you to restart the game. I even do it with emulators which I’ve seen people claim would crash.

No, that’s the whole point of suspending…to start right where I left off. I do usually save the game if I can before I suspend the Deck.

Yeah, especially if there is some kind of online validation check when you boot the game. Sometimes suspending is the only way to play a single player game offline.

I save before sleeping, but never feel any need to quit. And really, the saving is just being over cautious - I’ve never had any issue just putting the Deck to sleep and resuming where it left off.

Not using the sleep function seems to me like missing out on one of the biggest benefits of the Deck. I love being able to play for five minutes, pause for a minute or a day, and then pick up right where I left off.

Prior to the OLED, I had always been shutting down my LCD Deck between sessions. Starting with the OLED, while playing Hades (looks great on this new display) I decided to try the direct sleep route (with an active game session). However, I noticed I was getting audio crackles in game, after powering the device back on from sleep.

So, I’ve now just resigned to leaving the game, and sleeping the Deck from the home screen (this doesn’t appear to cause any audio bugs upon restoring).

Did you pause the game, then sleep? I always sleep with a game running and haven’t had an audio issue in a long time. I’ve always paused the game first though and it seems like a lot of people don’t? Haven’t played much hades on the deck though

If you’re not opposed to using Decky plugins, you could try the Pause Games plugin. Enable the option “Pause before suspend”. Haven’t had any audio issues with that.
