I’ve been waiting for iPad Pro with OLED for so many years now. Instabuy when it comes out. I have a gen 1 12.9 inch and really really want an 11" Pro. I just can’t stand going from the beautiful OLED on my phone to the LCD on iPad. Even if it’s a good screen on the Pro it’s instantly noticeable.
So, the M4 MacBook Pro next year in 2024?
I am more than happy to readily skip the current disappointment.
In a new investor memo seen by MacRumors, Pu said Apple intends to update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED screens sometime in 2026
From the article. Probably M6 at that point, and likely with a chassis refresh.
I wonder what chassis refresh are they gonna do 🤔

I wouldn’t call the current MacBooks a “disappointment” necessarily……perplexing in some regards perhaps but not disappointing
The M3 and M3 max have both had good improvements but I could see why some would be disappointed with the M3 pro since it didn’t get much of a performance uplift in comparison to the other two. This is a good year for the max buyers though.
Nah, it is. People were postponing their MacBook Pro purchases in anticipation for M3 with 3nm fabrication only now to rather get the M2 Pro instead when the M3 is right in front of them which was purported to come next year’s WWDC with the exception of those who’s employer is ready to pay for the top of the line M3 Max.
I hope the Macs come with more than 8GB of RAM.
And multi-monitor support.
But didn’t they say 8GB is just as good as 16?
Yes, and it’s not.
I know people shit on Macrumours but they did a little writeup to go with a review from a Max Tech co-host, and it covers this pretty well.
https://www.macrumors.com/2023/11/10/8gb-ram-in-m3-macbook-pro-proves-the-bottleneck/
The whole “8GB is as good as 16GB on Intel/AMD” makes literally zero sense.
You don’t need macrumors to tell you 16 >>> 8
Not sure how an article that compares 8gb vs 16gb on otherwise the same CPU can possibly disprove a statement that 8gb on Apple Silicon = 16gb on x86. We need to see comparisons to the most closely comparable Intel chip.
Of course 16gb is better than 8gb on the same machine, that was never disputed by anyone.
that 8gb on Apple Silicon = 16gb on x86
that’s obviosly false, the ISA is hardly relevant
This man. There is nothing wrong with selling base model MacBook air or iMac with 8 gigs. If you market a product as “pro” targeting professionals or power users , 16gigs should be the base memory for those models.
If you market a product as “pro” targeting professionals or power users , 16gigs should be the base memory for those models.
Why? If they make the part for iPads and MBAs anyway, why not offer the choice of a lower-price model? You can’t conceive of a person who doesn’t need the extra memory but would like the better display and extra ports?
It’s absolutely too expensive by probably at least $200, but that’s different than saying it shouldn’t even exist.
Mark my words, they will come with 12GB.
that’s not what pro means for Apple
“AirPods pro”
Yep, but people are still hell-bent on Apple giving 16GB for entry level MBs since very other Windows manufacturer does it. Heck, even comments in the post about a low-cost 12 inch MB had people saying Apple better release it with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Not going to happen…
but people are still hell-bent on Apple giving 16GB for entry level MBs since very other Windows manufacturer does it
Honestly, if there was a Windows laptop which had decent build quality with internals and software that didn’t break, and the OS was more like Windows 7, I’d just buy that. The specs in Windows laptops are very good at this point. It’s just everything else that’s the problem. I don’t want to pay the apple tax, but because of these shitty Windows laptops I’m forced to.
I recently spent 3 days debugging the WiFi on my Windows PC because it wouldn’t connect to the internet at all through one of my satellites, and would not connect to certain domains (specifically Epic and Windows Store download services) from the base router. The problem ended up being fixed by assigning a static IP.
I’ve spent tons of time fighting with all sorts of other weird problems in the past, often sound related. My wife’s work computer (a PC) refuses to do sound output over DP or HDMI, for example.
Point being, Windows machines, due to the OS alone, are worth several hundred dollars less than Macs to me because they take so much babysitting and can break in weird ways at a moment’s notice.
Yes, and their resale values are shit too. That’s another point in favour of Macs.
Why? 8 GB of RAM in a Mac equals 8.000 GB of RAM on Windows.
They might… but probably for $200 more than the current base price so it will be basically the same thing but with less options.
Might as well do touch screen also
OLED is nice to have, it will certainly bring a price hike too. So please release 12.9 Air. The only reason I bought Pro was purely because of the screen size.
I had OLED in 2014 lol
SteamDeck didn’t increase their price with an OLED display. No reason for Apple to do so as well. They can afford it.
No reason for Apple to do so as well
Money.
You new here?
Apple wants to use a new dual layer OLED display, this might be more expensive than other OLED displays.
Oh, my sweet summer child…
Not only did Valve maintain the same price, they made a bunch of refinements to improve repairability and component accessibility.
This is Valve subsidizing the PC gaming industry as a whole, content to make a shitload ($6b+/year) off their sales commissions that will grow alongside the industry.
Apple on the other hand expects to get paid for the device, the repairs, the software and digital content, and by the developers too.
Exactly. Valve actually cares about their consumers and LISTEN.
There’s no good reason to hike the price, but they absolutely will… it may very well even be a build to order option.
I want a pro with a iPad mini sized screen
Yes, this is the dream, but personally, I’ve been thinking more and more if I actually need it since it’s just used to consume content now due to the convenient size.
Hopefully jelly scrolling is out.
Other iPads are too large to comfortable use for most of what I want to do - and iPhone is a little small. The mini is just my preferred form factor and perfect for a tablet imo. If I wanted bigger, I’d use my MacBook Air
A lot of it centers around using two handed touch controls, or having it one handed to carry around.
Some of my primary use cases for the device:
- playing games (other iPads are too large to use touch controls comfortably)
- watching videos/content
- reading news/books
- cooking recipes & recipe manager app
- managing notes and reminders (I use heavily) - would be good for managing a shopping list too in the actual store
- it can serve as an emergency backup for VMware horizon if my work laptop isn’t working or when traveling, iPhone is too small and I don’t need a full size backup
- takings notes/sketches
YES PLEASE
iPad sales iirc Mini = 7% compared to say one of the Pro models at about 28%.
I think Apple’s Pricing Ladder would suggest:
- Mini
- Regular
- Air
- Pro - OLED only?
Again for the price laddering and then also sales volume.
I feel like sales would increase a little if the mini wasn’t so gimped compared to the heavier hitting models.
Also regular is 1st before the mini in that list
Apple is already making ridiculous markup on their products, I don’t think an OLED would make for a huge price hike honestly, and it would make their products even more enticing.
So please release 12.9 Air.
Let’s have even more confusing lineup than we have right now!
I don’t think there will be a 12.9 Air, just because Apple knows people will pay more solely for the screen size.
Steam Deck is sold at a loss.
That’s not a known fact. The price is “painful”, but that doesn’t mean they’re losing money per unit
And despite that they still don’t prevent you from installing Windows, or “sideloading” games from other stores… but ultimately, they don’t have to because they know that Steam is an incredible storefront that people want to use.
I don’t get why Apple is so concerned about sideloading eating into their profits. If the App Store is truly as good as they say it is, they shouldn’t have any problem keeping developers on board, and if they do, then clearly, it isn’t as good as other options
Valve may sell Steam Deck at a loss, but they know people will willingly use Steam enough for them to cover those costs.
Ditto, and I’d buy bigger if I could. But I don’t need the processor at all. But they also know that, and we know Apple will keep capitalizing on it.
I’ll buy a new Mac when it comes with 16 gb RAM stock
If the current MBP still charged $200 for 16gb of RAM but started at $200 less, you still wouldn’t buy it?
Right it’s such a dumb argument.
By the time they do it, 32gb will be the new bottom 😂
Apple will give us 12 gb and we’ll have to like it 😆
Got schooled on how this isn’t happening.
I will buy a new one when they bring faceID to MacBook Pro.
Hard pass from me for OLED on MacBook screens. Much prefer mini-led. Nearly the same contrast, with better uniformity and no risk of burn in.
I wish they’d give us a big ipad with a nice display for all the people who use their ipad mainly for social media and movies/series. I feel like there’s lots op people who’d love a 12.9 inch ipad but don’t need an M-series processor.
Right, Apple would never be able to reasonably price something
M2 Mac Mini and M1 Air are both absolute steals.
So, a 12.9 iPad Pro based on A17 with 4 GB of RAM starting at $999?
My guess Apple will keep the Price Ladder and charge more for the high end for people who will spend more anyway and want Premium features eg OLED.
They did it with the regular iPhone (14 & 15 Plus) and the M2 MacBook Air (15 inch). So there is a good chance they may bring a bigger, cheaper iPad Air eventually.
I want them to release an absurdly large iPad like the parody iPad on icarly
And they will still have 8GB od ram?
Have they addressed the issue of potential screen burn-in with OLED? Macs may be more susceptible bc of static images displayed when personal settings are set to not to shut off the screen during inactivity.
Anyone knows enough to tell me if OLED MacBook pros are supposed to look better than the current mini LED screens on the 14/16 MacBook Pros ?
I wonder if we’re ever going to get an OLED Pro Display or Studio Display.
Remove the notch if you want me to buy.
Notch doesn’t interfere with anything at all, never has
ugh. With OLED comes flicker.
What about PWM flicker? Current LCD displays may be better for extended use, unless Apple uses OLED displays.
OLED iPad still useless unless they allow side loading. It’s an oversized iPhone.
Ipads will always be useless. Esp the pricier pro ones. Better to get cheaper macbooks like m1 air.
Students would like to have a word…
I can tell you from personal experience that you’re blatantly wrong. They are found in droves on college and university campuses as they are super versatile. From writing to storing every textbook you’d need all in one slab of metal and glass.
I got my iPad Pro 1st year and haven’t looked back. 90% of textbooks I have needed I could get digital and writing on PDFs for lectures is essential for my learning.
Look, they may serve no use for you, but don’t parade yourself into thinking they must then serve no purpose.
And on the argument of “oh it’s just a big iPhone” is laughable these days.
Apple is of course bumping up HARDWARE Specs to increase Price all the while ignoring the biggest Value-Added = Software/OS which most users would benefit from. Agree it’s primarily aimed at higher prices and price laddering.
